Dealers and vehicle sales
Auto, motorcycle, powersports, marine and equipment dealers — anyone carrying titled inventory.
All industriesWhat this trade deducts
- Floor plan interest, which has its own rules
- Inventory cost, relieved per unit rather than in a lump
- Freight in on units purchased — capitalized, not expensed on arrival
- Reconditioning, detailing and parts consumed on units
- Tag, title and registration costs
- Dealer licensing, bonding and DMV fees
- Advertising, including the floor promotions nobody tracks
- Service department tools, lifts and diagnostic subscriptions
The part that costs money
Units with no cost in the system quietly become profit
A unit taken in trade, or bought with cash off the drawer, often never gets its cost keyed into the dealer system. It sits at zero, and when it sells the whole price is gross profit — on paper. The inventory roll stops tying to the valuation report, and nobody notices because the balance sheet still balances. We check that every month, and it is the single most common finding on a dealer's books. Freight is the other: shipping on units you bought rides with the unit until it sells, and expensing it on arrival distorts whichever month the truck showed up.

No limit, threshold or rate appears on these pages, on purpose. Those move every year and a stale number under an accounting firm's name is worse than no number at all. Anything with a date on it lives in the Tax Center, where every entry carries its source and the day we checked it. If your situation needs a figure, call us and we will give you the current one.

Call and a person picks up. Send a note and a person reads it. Either way it reaches somebody at the firm, not a queue.
